Maria Markovich earned a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and a Certificate of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. At the Pennsylvania Academy, she devoted four years to the study of classical Greek and Roman figurative sculpture. She creates figurative sculpture inspired by nature, using renewable natural materials. Contemporary influences and inspirations are, among others, the sculptures of Deborah Butterfield and Andy Goldsworthy. She has participated in art residency programs, among these, Stone Hill Quarry Art Park (NY), Vermont Studio Center (VT), Brush Creek (WY), Hirseholm Artist’s Residency (Denmark), and most recently Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives (NSW, Australia). She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and her sculpture is in many private collections.
She lives and works in the Philadelphia area.
