Cathy Hetznecker lives and works in Havertown, PA. She began her career as a ceramic artist, and threw pots for over a decade. Upon the birth of her children, Hetznecker changed her medium to textiles. When introduced to the traditional art of crocheting rag rugs. Cathy was struck with the similarities to working with clay: the work was functional, meditative in process, and full of color and texture.
Cathy takes a traditional approach to her rug-making, and uses primarily fabric remnants from American woolen mills and from the workrooms of interior decorators and upholsterers. Since her advent as a rug-maker, Cathy has now expanded her craft to upholstering furniture, creating pillows of all shapes and sizes and more.
Cathy teaches regularly these past few years in her community and around Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Hetznecker received a BA in Studio art from the University of New Hampshire, and spent four years studying under ceramic sculptor Paula Winokur. She is currently President of the Haverford Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, and regularly exhibits and teaches around the region.
